Chemistry and Periodic Table

Define Element: in this post:A chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom distinguished by its atomic number, which is the number of protons in its nucleus. The term is also used to refer to a pure chemical substance composed of atoms with the same number of protons.[1] Common examples of elements are iron, copper, silver, gold, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. In total, 117 elements have been observed as of 2008, of which 94 occur naturally on Earth. 80 elements have stable isotopes, namely all elements with atomic numbers 1 to 82, except elements 43 and 61 (technetium and promethium). Elements with atomic numbers 83 or higher (bismuth and above) are inherently unstable, and undergo radioactive decay. The elements from atomic number 83 to 94 have no stable nuclei, but are nevertheless found in nature, either surviving as remnants of the primordial stellar nucleosynthesis which produced the elements in the solar system, or else produced as short-lived daughter-isotopes through the natural decay of uranium and thorium.[2]

All chemical matter consists of these elements. New elements of higher atomic number are discovered from time to time, as products of artificial nuclear reactions.

DefineAtom:The smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element. Also from the Greek meaning "to cut", or the basic unit of matter.( from the astronomy lectures)

This is a diagram of a Atom!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nucleus is the center of the atom and considered the brain of it. In addition it is 99.9 % of the mass of an atom.

Electrons are never found in the nucleus and they travel very fast, they are negatively charged and represented with a minus ( -) sign.

Neutrons are neurally in charge, they have no charge. They are represented with a zero (0 )

Protons are positively charged and are represented with a (+).

Define atomic number and show diagram:The number of protons in an atomic nucleus.

Define mass number and show diagram:

show five elements with there symbol, atomic number and mass number.

Define Matter: and list 8 to 9 properties:The term matter traditionally refers to the substance that bodies are made of. One common way to identify this "substance" is through its properties: for example, matter is anything that has both mass and volume.

Ex.metal is matter
air is matter
water is matter
paper is matter
the earth is made of matter
the sun is made of matter
plants are made of matter
rocks are made of matter
NOT MATTER
heat is not matter, it is energy moving from something with a higher temperature to something with a lower temperature.
light is not matter.
sound is not matter, it is vibrations of molecules in the air.

Define what is a Prefix: A prefix is an affix which is placed before the stem of a word.
Define the following:
Hetor-different
Homeo-same
Marco-large
epi-above
cyto-cell
prot-first
exo-outer
sym-together
mult-many

Define what is a suffix:an affix that is added at the end of the word.
logy-stugy
meter-measurement
pahge-eater

What is the melting point: Is the actack temperature an object reaches when it melts.
what is the boiling point:The boiling point of an element or a substance is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid equals the environmental pressure surrounding the liquid.

NICKEL (Ni):
Nickel is a silver colored metal.Nickel is called a rare element because there is a very long percentage of nickel in the earth's crust. Many scientist believe that there is a very large percent of nickel inside the Earth. Nickel was discoverd by a swedish chemist, in 1751.Nickel is a german word for Santa."SANTA'S COPPER"

Facts about Nickel
  • The U.S. five-cent cion called the Nickel is really made of copper.
  • An important modern use of Nickel is nickel-cadmium battery.
  • Atomic Number: 28
  • Symbol: Ni
  • Atomic Weight: 58.6934
  • Melting Point (K): 1726
  • Boiling Point (K): 3005
  • Uses: Nickel is used primarily for the alloys it forms. It is used for making stainless steel and many other corrosion resistant alloys. Copper-nickel alloy tubing is used in desalination plants. Nickel is used in coinage and for armor plating. When added to glass, nickel gives a green color. Nickel plating is applied to other metals to provide a protective coating. Finely divided nickel is used as a catalyst for hydrogenating vegetable oils. Nickel is also used in ceramics, magnets, and batteries.

Definition of Comedy: A Shakespearean comedy is one that has a happy ending, usually involving marriages between the unmarried characters, and a tone and style that is more light-hearted than Shakespeare's other plays.(wikipedia.org)

Definition of Tragedy:A play, that portrays or depicts calamitous events and has an unhappy but meaningful ending. A disastrous event, especially one involving distressing loss or injury to life: an expedition that ended in tragedy, with all hands lost at sea. A tragic aspect or element. (Answers.com)

I prefer to watch Shakespeare's comedy's, more than tragedy's because I dislike the endings of his tragedy's, I always end up wishing I didn't watch the tragedy. Therefore, I like comedy's more, plus most of them are funny and more enjoyable. Today I watched As you like It, a comedy play, this BBC movie lasted 150 minutes. I enjoyed it, but did not find it funny. Four couples got married at the end! This is typical shakespere comedy.

Today I found out that Shakespeare wrote three genre History, Comedy, and Tragedy.

Scientific method

The Scientific Method is Systematic apporach of observation, hypothesis formation, hypothesis testing and hypothesis evaluation that forms the basis for modern science.

Astronomy

Define the big bang using your own words: A solar theory holding that the universe originated around 20 billion years ago from the violent explosion of a very small group of matter of extremely high density and temperature.

Define: Hubble telescope and add a picture of it, see if there is gadget to add for telescope:The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a space telescope that was carried into orbit by the space shuttle in April 1990.

*Meteorite:A meteorite is a natural object originating in outer space that survives an impact with the Earth's surface.

*Planet:A body of great size but not massive enough for nuclear reactions to ever occur. They orbit a star. EX. like Earth

*Star: A celestial body of hot gases that radiates energy derived from thermonuclear reactions in the interior.

*Sun spot: Are dark ares on the sun that are cooler than the rest of the sun.

*Scientific Notation and show an example:A short-hand way of writing very large or very small numbers. The notation consists of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by an integral power of 10. For example, 47,300 = 4.73 x 4 ; 0.000000021 = 2.1 x 10 -8
*Light year:The distance that light travels in a vacuum in 1 year; 5.88 trillion miles or 9.46 trillion kilometers
*Galaxy:A collection of star systems; any of the billions of systems each having many stars and nebulae and dust; "`extragalactic nebula' is a former name for `galaxy'"

*Celestial pole:One of two points of intersection of the Earth's axis and the celestial sphere

*Spectroscopy: The study of the way in which atoms absorb and emit electromagnetic radiation. Spectroscopy allows astronomers to determine the chemical composition of stars.

*Telescope:A magnifier of images of distant objects.

*Constellation:A group of stars that make a shape, often named after mythological characters, people, animals, and things.

Review of Much ado about Nothing By William Shakesphere

1 hour 51 ,mins.

I liked this play a lot, this movie was a comedy, but at times I thought it just might be tradgy.I thought this more then once. One time in the beginning, when Claudio told his friend the Prince that he was in love with this maid named Hero. So the Prince suggested since he was more brave and out going, at the masked ball he would pretend to be Claudio. Therefore when the Prince was pretending to be Claudio like an impostor, he instead asked Hero to be his wife instead of Claudio; or this is what I thought had happened. When this occurred I had to read the back of the movie to see if it was really a comedy or not. Later on in the movie we find out that the Prince really did ask Hero to marry Claudio instead of for him self.
Another time I thought this play was a tragedy was at the the end when Beatrice asked Benedict to kill Claudio because he humiliated her cousin Hero at her wedding. Only because the Prince's brother tricked Claudio that Hero was sleeping with another man. So at Hero's wedding he said in front of every one that she was not a maid . Her father in shock believed Claudio. Yet, I knew that the Prince's brother, Don Jon (the bastard) wanted this marriage to not take place. This part upset me a lot because I new that Hero was innocent. Don Jon was an evil, unhappy, negative person who just want to see people as unhappy as he was. In the whole play he was this way and it made you hate him, plus he was trying to brake up Hero and Claudio.
Beatrice and Benedict both said in the beginning of the play "That they would never get married!", but they secretly liked each other, not even wanting to admit it to them selves. When Hero and Claudio were going to get married, the Prince made a bet that he could get Beatrice and Benedict together before Hero and Claudio got married, within seven days. Therefore, when Benedict was in the garden the Prince, Claudio, and Hero's father started to walk towards him so he hide because he was embarrassed from the night before. They sat down and started to discuss how much Beatrice loved Benedict and how he is not worthy of her love. Also, that she would rather die than to show that she loved him." As soon as Benedict heard this he leaped with joy and happiness.

In the meantime, Hero and her mother, who are also part of the bet, saw that Beatrice was walking by and begin a conversation about Benedict's love for her. Beatrice interested followed in the bushes. The two started to say that Benedict should be told that Beatrice is unable to love anyone. Beatrice loving Benedict did not want them to do that. They walked away saying to them selves"Cupid kills with arrows some with traps." She was also was ecstatic that he loved her. I loved there love, hate relationship. Needless to say the Prince won the bet, the two fell in love and had a joint wedding with Hero and Claudio.

I thought this play by Shakespeare was very funny and enjoyable. This far it is my favorite and I recommend it . I felt happy and at other times disappointed. I think the title is like all dresses up and nowhere to go. For instance Claudio got all worked up for nothing, he should have trusted his Friend, Claudio did not trust Hero, they all tended to believe the villain. The only thing I did not understand is why Don John made all this trouble for everyone. I wish it was better explained. Maybe it is in the work of shakesphere and the movie version left it out.

Review of Andy Warhol later works Exhibition

Where was the exhibition held how many (approx) works were on view?
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the Milwaukee Art Museum. (MAM)There was less than 30 paintings.

What did you like most about this exhibition?
How they had some of andy's work that I have never seen.

What did you like least?
I wished there was more to see or had more his earlier works.

How would you rate the exhibition over all ? Well put together, Worthwhile, Educational and why.
Worthwhile

Describe in brief what the exhibition contained:

Andy's later work, was on large scaled canvas.

What was your favorite piece and least piece? Why?

My favorite piece was the last supper with the dove sign and the bird. In fact it was the last piece in the exhibit, and it was the last piece he did, he died recently after he painted this picture. I liked the plainness and the colors.

My least favorite was 50 Dentures. I didn't like it because it was dark and it didn't make seance to me. The colors were wrong, and there wasn't 50 teeth. To me it was a waste of canvas.

Do a small bit of research on how urine is used in painting.

Andy Warhol, used copper metallic paint and urine on canvas which is called Oxidation Painting.

Supply one picture on his work that you saw, example last supper work , or the camouflage pieces and one link, (it can be from the urine painting research)

What did you think of his self portrait?

very werid, and crazy hair.

Review of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew

The movie I watched was about William Shakespeare's play the Taming of the Shrew, it starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It was about a scolding nagging bad-tempered women or 'shrew', named Kate or Katharina. This Kate, had a little sister named Bianca that every one in the town loved, and her father loved her more than Kate. However, her father would not allow anyone to marry his younger daughter until his elder daughter, Kate was married first. Therefore, Bianca's suitors try to find some one to marry this horrible shrew.

Then they found a man that was willing to marry Katharina, because of her money or dowry. He was a poverty-stricken gentleman, looking for a wealthy wife, his name was Petruchio. When he gets to her house, she is tearing apart her room. Throwing chairs, lamps tables and more. Yet, when he walks into the room she stops, for just a moment and then, continues to scream and yell. Petruchio finally gets her to calm down and to agree to marry him.

On their wedding day , Petruchio dressed like a joker, which completely embarrassed Katharina. After that, she was furious and when the Priest asked her "Will you take Petruchio as your husband?" She said "I WILL ....." but Petruchio kissed her right before she could say "NEVER!"and they were married.

After they were married and he got his money from her father, Petruchio wanted to leave her behind at the wedding banquet. But she followed him and he put her on a donkey in the rain. They did not go to eat at the wedding banquet. Petruchio rides off on a horse, thinking that Katharina would not follow but she followed in the rain and the snow. When she gets to his house it is despicable and dusty. The next day she cleans and fixes his gross house.

That same day she finds out that her little sister was to be married. The next day Petruchio said " Wake up, lets go to your sister's." Katharina said " But my lord its two in the morning" He replied "No it is seven in the morning, if you want to go to your sisters wedding "She said " No it's, seven" in the sweetest voice she could. So they went on their way to Bianca's wedding. Petruchio said" Isn't the sun so beautiful" Kate exclaimed " That is not the sun, that is the moon" He said " That is the sun, if I say it's the sun."

So Katharina and Petruchio went to Bianca's wedding. During the wedding banquet all the men made a bet to see who had the most obedient wife. The winner got 4,000 crowns or money. The first man which was the husband of Kate's sister says to his servant " Tell my wife to come to me". His servant came and told him that" Your wife said, she was busy".The second man told his servant to "Have my wife come to me right away". His servant came running back and said "Your wife said if you want me, then you come to me".Petruchio told this servant "Tell my wife that I demand her to come here".
His servant came back running. He looked behind him and there was Katharina, in one arm was her sister and in the other arm was the other man's wife. She let go of them and she said to her sister and the other wife " Women are soft and fragile and God made us this way. Men are Strong and brave and God made them that way to protect us and shelter us. We should thank them since we are unable to do this for are ourselves. So us women should obey and honor our husbands." She makes the other two girls kneel and her self as well, she puts her hand out and Petruchio helps her up. This was a very touching part in the movie, it showed that Katharina was tamed and was now a good obedient wife. She left the room and Petruchio ran after her. He no longer just loved her for her money but now loved her for her.

THE END

I liked this movie a lot it was funny and very moving. At the begin you hate Kate, in the middle you feel sorry for her and at the end you love her! Most of the movie you dislike Petruchio but at the end he was the one who made Kate who she was at the end, so you have to end up liking him.
